Take a look at what we've been up to!
Sophica, in collaboration with our many partners, has organized a number of unique experiences as part of our journey in STEM studies. From flying in propellor planes from Billy Bishop Airport to gliding in lakes with guided canoe tours, we look forward to having you join us on our next adventure.

Billy Bishop Airport
Students had an incredible two-day experience with Mad Science and a field trip to Billy Bishop Airport, exploring flight science, meeting real-life pilots and engineers, and learning about aviation careers.
Day 1: Through hands-on experiments, they discovered the Four Forces of Flight and crafted paper aircraft, including a take-home Skyhawk model.
Day 2: At Billy Bishop Airport, they explored aircraft up close, met inspiring female speakers in aviation, and engaged with interactive exhibits like flight simulations. Limited exploration flights for students ages 8-17 gave many a thrilling first flight experience!

Guided Canoe Trip
Recently, Sophica organized a guided canoe trip to the Cootes Paradise Nature Reserve, providing participants with a hands-on educational experience in ecology. As we paddled through the serene waters, we marveled at the majestic blue herons and elegant swans gliding gracefully across the water, their presence underscoring the importance of preserving natural habitats. The picturesque scene of lilies on lily pads added to the beauty, while our guides explained their vital role in maintaining the ecosystem's health. This outing not only reinforced STEM concepts but also fostered a deeper appreciation for the natural world and the importance of conservation, embodying our mission to inspire and educate through immersive experiences.

Solar Powered Cars
In a dynamic classroom session, a Mechatronics specialist from the University of Waterloo educated young scientists about solar cars. They dissected the technology behind these vehicles, emphasizing benefits like zero emissions and reduced reliance on fossil fuels. Acknowledging challenges such as sunlight intermittency and high costs, they stressed the importance of innovation. The session left students informed and inspired by the potential of sustainable transportation, guided by the expertise of their Waterloo mentor

Solar Eclipse
A group of enthusiastic students gathered at the Central Library in Mississauga to delve into the fascinating phenomenon of a solar eclipse. Eager to expand their knowledge, they participated in an engaging workshop that combined scientific explanations with interactive activities. Equipped with special viewing glasses and models of the solar system, the students learned about the celestial mechanics that cause a solar eclipse and the importance of safe viewing practices. The event not only sparked their curiosity about astronomy but also fostered a sense of community among young learners passionate about exploring the wonders of the universe.

DNA Extraction
Students gathered at the Central Library in Mississauga for an engaging hands-on workshop on DNA extraction from strawberries. This simple yet fascinating experiment not only illuminated the wonders of molecular biology but also inspired a sense of curiosity and discovery among the participants.

Meet Dragon's Den Entrepreneur
A group of enterprising students had the unique opportunity to meet a successful entrepreneur who had previously appeared on Dragon's Den and founded her own company specializing in date sugar production. Inspired by her journey and the innovative nature of her product, the students decided to experiment with date sugar in their culinary projects. They developed a range of health-conscious and delicious treats, eager to showcase their creations. Impressed by their ingenuity, the Dragon's Den contestant agreed to mentor them, offering valuable feedback and guidance to refine their products for potential market success.

Western University Wind Tunnel
Students took a bus to Western University for an unforgettable adventure as we take a class trip to WindEEE—the world’s first 3D wind research facility at Western University! This is a unique opportunity for students to explore cutting-edge wind research, step inside powerful wind tunnels, and see how scientists study the forces of nature.

Toyota Motor Manufacturing Center
Students had the opportunity to tour Toyota's manufacturing center, where they witnessed the real-time assembly of cars, with both humans and robots working in harmony. They also gained insights into Toyota's history and origins.
